Two approaches to tackle fluid-structure interaction phenomena are studied and compared. One is already implemented in FINE/Marine and is based on modal analysis, but is designed only for linear deformations, while the other uses beam models, an approach naval architects are more familiar with, and that allows bigger deformations and non-linearities. Both approaches are combined with the methods for hydrofoil fluid simulation within ISIS-CFD, including the sock-mesh approach with multi-surface and flux-component Hessian (MS-FCH) adaptive grid refinement. To compare these approaches, simulations using the NACRA 17 foil will first be performed, in order to compare numerical results to experiments performed by SSPA, as well as simulations on IMOCA's foil, as we aim to simulate the whole appended hull.
